The City requires residential, commercial and industrial property owners, occupants or operators to contract with Republic Services  888-442-2666 Recycle Works website.

State law (AB 341) mandates recycling at businesses that generate 4 or more cubic yards of waste per week and at multi-family dwellings of 5 or more units.

Construction & Demolition Debris Recycling

Project valued in excess of $5,000, requires a Construction and Demolition Debris Waste Management Plan (PDF) submitted to City Hall for review.

Hazardous & Electronic Waste Recycling/Disposal

It is illegal to dispose of hazardous waste San Mateo County’s RecycleWorks maintains an excellent website of resources.

Hazardous Waste Policy

  • Household batteries and cell phones in zip locked bag on top of their recycling cart
  • No automotive batteries
  • Lithium batteries must be taped and cell phones must be wrapped in paper before being placed in the plastic bag.
  • Free pickup of electronics as part of its on-call cleanups 650-592-2411.
  • Ocean Shore Hardware accepts batteries, small printer toner cartridges, CD’s and DVD’s, and cell phones. The store also accepts fluorescent light bulbs and latex-based paint.
  • No car batteries

Ox Mountain Landfill on Highway 92 accepts used motor oil, oil filters, and antifreeze, but call to check at 650-726-1819.
